Two hydro-power plants foundation were laid in Sukkur on 5th January 2015 by Asif Ali Zardari, and were supposed to be completed in 20 months. Yet no work has started on them. The Sindh government who is overseeing the development of these plants hasn’t allocated any funds for the project.
The hydro-power plants which were supposed to be constructed at Rohri canal and Nara canal would have generated 25 megawatts of electricity. The plant at Rohri canal would have generated 9 megawatts while the one at Nara canal would have generated 15 megawatts of electricity. The cost to complete the Rohri canal hydel power plant was $36.4 million while the cost to complete the Nara canal plant was $47 million.
Rohri canal and Nara canal are ideal sites for hydro-power plants since they are among the largest canals in Sukkur. Rohri canal has three falls and can carry 16,000 cusecs of water. Nara canal has one fall, and can carry 18,000 cusecs of water.
Work hasn’t started on them, and no one from the Sindh government was available to comment on the issue.
