There are many different kinds of fans available in the market – ceiling fan, reversible fan, pedestal fan, bracket fan, exhaust fan, and mist fan. Selecting one depends on its use and where it is going to be installed. Below are details of the different types and models.
Fan and Room Size
Ceiling fans in Pakistan are mainly available in 3 different sizes – 36”, 48”, and 56”. The 36” ceiling fan is suitable for small room sizes around 6’ x 6’, while the 48” ceiling fan is suitable for medium room sizes around 10’ x 10’, and the 56” ceiling fan is suitable for big room sizes around 15’ x 15’.
Installing the right size ceiling fan is important as it helps to cool the room efficiently. Even in large rooms, the size of the fan’s rod is important for ventilation. Installing a small rod fan in a large room will prove costly as it won’t be able to cool the room, and eventually its rod will need to be replaced. A long rod fan increases air pressure which helps to cool the large room quickly.
Blade and Design
There are many different kinds of fans available in the market. Selecting one depends on your taste. The types available are the traditional fan, curved blades, and fan light. The traditional fan has a simple design and is most widely used in houses. The curved blades deliver better air circulation than a normal fan. The fan light has lights in its center and serves a dual purpose, both as a fan and a light. You won’t need to install lights on the wall as the light from the fan will cover the whole room. However it might not be as effective as the other two types of fan because its speed will be slower.
The number of blades in a fan is important since it impacts the amount of electricity consumed. Some fans have 3 blades, some 4, and some 5. A three blade fan is more balanced than the others; this enables it to consume less electricity. It also costs less than the others, helping you to save money upfront and on electricity bills. Additional blades make the fan heavier and puts extra load on the fans’ motor. This makes it consume more electricity and increases the electricity bill.
When installing the fan, a 3/29 copper wire should be used. It helps to reduce electricity and ensures the fan functions efficiently.

All the reputed ceiling fans brands are effective and good quality.
Pedestal fans can be placed anywhere, indoors or outdoors, and can be carried from one room to another quite easily. Their mobility makes them very popular among consumers.
Pedestal fans are available in many different sizes. There are small pedestal fans which can easily be placed on a table, for better cooling. Their motor isn’t powerful enough and consumes less electricity, thereby saving on bills. Large sized pedestal fans are heavier in weight, and they can be placed in a distance and will still be able to cool the room. They have a powerful motor which makes them consume more electricity.
The diameter size for a pedestal fan is very important because it impacts the amount of electricity consumed. A small diameter sized fan like a 15” will consume less electricity, but its cooling will be relatively less too. A large diameter sized fan like a 36” will put more stress on its motor, which in turn would consume more electricity. Hence its cooling will be better and effective in large room as well.
The blowing power or speed of the pedestal fan determines the efficiency of the fan. The speeds of different pedestal fans should be compared before buying one. A fan with high blowing power signifies that its motor is powerful. The speed of one fan at a medium setting will be equal to another fan’s speed at high setting. This is beneficial since less electricity will be consumed and the motor’s life will be extended.
Comparison of different Models
There are many companies manufacturing pedestal fans. Among the better quality ones are Pak fans, Royal fans, and G.F.C fans. They manufacture 5-6 different models.Table 2 below compares some of the different models available in the market.
|Brand||Diameter Size||Speed RPM||Power Consumption|
Pak fans consume less electricity, while G.F.C fans produce higher speed. All three brands are good, and you can purchase any pedestal fans from them.
The average cost of a pedestal fans is between PKR 4000 to 5500, depending on their diameter size. The smaller the diameter, the lower the price.
Bracket fans are wall mountable fans that are light weight and don’t have a powerful motor. They consume less electricity than ceiling fans and some pedestal fans. Their diameter and blowing power are important factors to consider when buying one.
The diameter size impacts the amount of electricity consumed. Smaller diameters consume less electricity but the cooling will be less too. Large diameter sizes consume more electricity, and have better cooling. They have a powerful motor which enables them to be installed in large room sizes.
The blowing power determines the efficiency of the bracket fan. A fan with a low blowing power will always be on in full speed, will consume more electricity and reduce the motor’s life. On the other hand a fan with a high blowing power will usually used in medium speed, thus consuming less electricity and extending the motor’s life.
Comparison of different Models
There are many companies manufacturing bracket fans. Among the better quality ones are Pak fans, Royal fans, and G.F.C fans. G.F.C fans are considered to have the best quality fans as almost all of their models consume less electricity and also run at good speed. The importance of exhaust fans is often overlooked. They are an integral part of the kitchen and bathroom. Some people have installed them in rooms for better ventilation especially during winters. During a shower, humidity builds up inside the bathroom and can damage wooden doors and cabinets since it breeds mildew which feeds on wood. In order to prevent this, an exhaust fan is installed which helps to ventilate the air outside of the bathroom. The same is the case in the kitchen.
When buying an exhaust fan, there are few things that you need to consider. The first thing is the size. Exhaust fans are available in different sizes, and when considering one, make sure the size is suitable for your use. Installing a small sized exhaust fan will save money, but it’ll consume more electricity because it will take longer to ventilate the humidity out. A large sized exhaust fan will cost more, but it will be more efficient as the humidity will be removed in less time.
Exhaust fans have different speeds. The ventilation speed helps to clear humidity and odor quickly. An average speed of a good exhaust fan is around 1400 rpm, with some slight variations. When buying an exhaust fan, make sure the speed is around this figure.
Plastic or Metal
Another thing to consider when buying an exhaust fan is whether its body is made up of plastic or metal. Plastic body exhaust fans are cheaper and there is lots of variety available. Metal body exhaust fans might be expensive, but the body rusts after a while. They need more maintenance and cleaning.

|G.F.C Fans||18”||Metal body round in shape||1200||105 W|
|G.F.C Fans||18”||Metal body square in shape||1200||105 W|
The average cost of a plastic body exhaust fan is between PKR 900 to 2000, depending on the diameter. The average cost of a Metal body exhaust fan is between PKR 1500 to Rs 3000, depending on the diameter.
Among the brands, Royal fans manufacture better quality exhaust fans as they have good speed, and consume less or the same amount of electricity as other manufacturers.
A Mist fan is basically a skeleton room cooler, a trimmed version of it. It functions just like a room cooler, minus the heavy body. Mist fans are in demand and very popular these days.
Mist fans are light weight and can be easily moved anywhere. Their design features a bucket base which houses the motor pump and a water reservoir. The reservoir holds a gallon of water. The pump forces the water up to the blades where it is released as a mist.
There are quite a few companies manufacturing mist fans, with the well-known brands being Pak fans, Royal fans, G.F.C fans, and Yunas fans. Their average price ranges from PKR 10,000 to 13,800 and are available in sizes of 12” and 16”.
Pak fan mist fan is recommended from all the retailers.
Reversible fans are special kinds of fans that have a dual purpose. Typically a fan is used to lower the room temperature. However, a different kind of technique is employed in a reversible fan which enables it to warm the room instead of cooling it in winters.
During winters, warm air is collected near the ceiling. This air stays there and doesn’t help to warm the room while the cool air flows in the lower parts of the room. The reversible fan technique reverses the direction of the fan which forces the cooler air towards the ceiling resulting in warmer air being pushed lower. This helps to warm the room and also decrease the heating costs.
At the moment only G.F.C fans is manufacturing reversible fans, and as the demand grows, more brands will produce it. G.F.C fans’ Nabeel reversible series is available at very few retailers in the market, and its price is around PKR 3,000. There are two models available, and both are 56”. Both have a fan speed of 330 rpm, but one consumes 75W of power, while the other consumes 80W of power.
